Knowledge centre for medicines in wastewater

The Swedish Government, wanting to find out more about the environmental effects of drugs, tasked the Medical Products Agency with setting up a knowledge centre in the field, with an annual grant of SEK 5 million. This would bring together Swedish participants and constitute a platform for dialogue and cooperation, including working for increased environmental awareness in EU legislation on medicines and in other international forums.

The Government’s commitment to a knowledge centre for pharmaceutical drugs in the environment was a clear result of the previous research programme’s — MistraPharma’s — progress in surveying drug residues in, and removing them from, wastewater.
